Cumbria Family History Society

Membership of the Cumbria Family History Society is open to anyone with an interest in family or local history in the area covered by the modern county of Cumbria, which was formed in 1974 with the re-drawing of administrative boundaries throughout most of the UK. Cumbria comprises the historic counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, as well as the Sedbergh District of Yorkshire and the Furness District of Lancashire.

Members of the CFHS receive four issues a year of our Newsletter and have access, through the Members’ Forum on our website, to additional family history data, newspaper transcripts and, most importantly, the expertise of other experienced and helpful members. The Society organises one-day conferences each year in April (at Seascale) and June (at Burton-in-Kendal, including the Society’s AGM). In November we have a weekend conference at Crooklands Hotel near Kendal. Society representatives also attend local and family history fairs, and hold weekly help sessions at Carlisle Archives. We also have a London Branch that hosts regular talks (currently being held online).

The Society works closely with Cumbria Archives and volunteers are engaged in transcribing records, many of which can be purchased as downloads from our online shop.
