Members of the East Surrey Family History Society receive a quarterly journal, on paper or by email, which carries interesting family history news reports and articles by fellow members. It’s both the Society’s official publication and a great way to keep in touch with Society events and to learn from other people’s experiences.
There’s also a monthly e-newsletter which is delivered direct to your email address which is packed with news, local events and hints and tips on useful family history sources. You can catch up on previous months’ copies on the Society website at www.eastsurreyfhs.org.uk where you will also find the details of upcoming talks, useful information about local archives and libraries, the Society Bookstall and Members’ Interests. You can also request searches in the Society database which has been compiled over many years and which includes some unique records.
Regular meetings are held at five locations around Surrey which both members and non-members are welcome to attend where you can meet like-minded people and hear talks on a variety of related topics. See our website for details of dates, locations, times and topics.
We are developing a Members’ Area on our website which will give exclusive access to some of our data, and information particularly relevant when researching East Surrey ancestors. Also the latest issue of the e-News is available. The method of login on can be obtained from the webmaster.
Please see our Society Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/ESFHS/ for up to the minute news and comment.
The Society is unable to undertake family research other than those services offered to members.
Some archives and local studies libraries will undertake research for a fee, see the Research Contacts page.
The Research collection - Our research collection at our Lingfield Research and Advice Centre has been catalogued however it is currently being updated following a reorganisation but consists of:
The library booklist, items in this list can be loaned out.
Guides and sources, items in these lists are not available for loan.
Please contact the Lingfield research centre by email for further information
Searches in the Society's Research Collection - If you have any questions about the search service then send an email to the Search co-ordinator by going to the contacts page, using the contacts form, and include your membership number. A small fee may be payable depending on the work required.
**Please note - We are only able to deal with searches on the days that our Research Centre is open. This does mean that the service will not be as quick as we would like and it could be over a week before a response can be made. This should be borne in mind if you have an urgent enquiry and also that members' enquiries will be dealt with first, in date order, to ensure a fair service to members.**
